Canto announced the general availability of Cumulus 8, a major update to the company's Digital Asset Management (DAM) software.

Cumulus 8 is used by publishing houses, graphic design companies and many other businesses as the cornerstone of their digital asset management workflow. It helps users track graphics, digital photos, audio, video and documents. The system provides methods for file archive and retrieval, file manipulation, workflow management, catalog generation, portals businesses can offer to partners, file publishing and sharing and asset tracking.

The new version 8 features major improvements like usage statistics and reporting. Version 8 now catalogs assets via e-mail, provides secure uploads of photos taken with mobile devices, security cameras and other imaging products, improves performance, provides a user commenting mechanism to help enhance collaboration, incorporates users-defined filters, lets you compare multiple assets at once, does license-free watermarking, and has a built-in image editor that lets you create image variants.

Canto has also updated the Cumulus 8 product like by adding a new entry-level addition and making network licenses more affordable for add-ons. The Application Programming Interface (API), used by IT pros and third-party app developers, has also been enhanced with performance improvements.

Server system requirements call for Mac OS X 10.4 or later or Mac OS X Server 10.4 or later, 700MB free hard disk space and 256MB RAM. TCP/IP network services are also required.

Client system requirements call for Mac OS X 10.4 or later, 1024 x 768 display, 350MB hard disk space, 25MB RAM, and TCP/IP support.
