Monopoly City Streets on Google Maps Overwhelmed by Demand

Forget Apple's morning announcements and The Beatles: Rock Band; Monopoly's where it's at this morning, as Hasbro's servers buckle under demand for the Google Maps-infused game.

Monopoly City Streets launched today, but a post on what appears to be the game's official blog says registration has slowed "due to overwhelming response." The blog says to keep trying, which we've done to no avail.

Monopoly City Streets, which is free to play, tosses the traditional square-shaped game board in favor of the entire globe, with help from Google Maps. Every player gets $3 million to start, which is used to purchase streets that earn money on a daily basis.

Unlike regular Monopoly, there's no rolling of the dice or need to pay money for passing by someone else's pad. You can, however, buy streets away from other players. The game will last four months, and is essentially a race to earn as much money as possible (a cynical commentary on life, perhaps?).

But don't blame Google for today's mishaps: Hasbro created Monopoly City Streets using the Google Maps API, and the search giant only provided occasional guidance. From what I can see, Hasbro has little or no experience with massive multiplayer online games, so maybe the toy and game company just wasn't prepared for the demand. You can hardly blame the company, considering how buzz grew around the game at practically the last minute.

I've reached out to a Hasbro representative for details, but haven't heard back.
