Google has sold just 135,000 of its Nexus One mobile phones since the handset was launched in January.

According to mobile analysts Flurry, Motorola sold 1.05 million Droids (known as the Milestone in the UK) in the first 74 days after it launched, that's eight times more than the Nexus One.

Meanwhile, Apple sold one million iPhones during the same period after the smartphone debuted in 2007.

"Despite the fact that the Google Nexus One is the most advanced Android handset to date, and enjoyed substantial buzz leading up to its release, the launch has been overshadowed by lower than expected sales," Flurry said.

"As Google and Apple continue to battle for the mobile marketplace, Google Nexus One may go down as a grand, failed experiment or one that ultimately helped Google learn something that will prove important in years to come."

The news comes as the US Patent and Trademark Office told Google it may be unable to use the name 'Nexus One', which it filed in December 2009, as Integra Telecom registered a product called Nexus in 2008.

However it's unlikely the trademark is held in the UK. So while Google may need to change the name of its 'superphone' in the US, the Nexus One could still be sold to Brits.

The Google Nexus One is expected to hit UK shelves some time next month.
