Rumor me this: A Canadian game site says Microsoft may be on the cusp of announcing live TV broadcasts on the Xbox 360 by 2011.
Citing "a trusted source" (with faux-link to said source in bold, whatever that means), the folks at GameFocus say U.S. and Canadian gamers are in for something along the lines of Sky TV, which rolled out in Europe for the Xbox 360 as well as Windows Media Center PCs last October.
Yawn? Stick around. Apparently GameFocus' source says the Xbox 360 will also work with a local Canadian telecom to offer PVR functionality. That's Personal Video Recorder, if you're wondering, same as a DVR (digital video recorder). Read that again: Record-and-store live TV on...well, presumably your Xbox 360's hard drive.
The source wasn't sure who'd handle the service stateside, but think of the implications if the rumor's accurate and someone's already lined up to.
So maybe this isn't a total surprise. I wrote about an Xbox TV channel possibly in the offing last week. GameFocus says the difference between that rumor and this one is that we're now talking multiple TV channels, all with high-def options, and the option to capture and store feeds at leisure.
Ready, set, E3 2010 Microsoft press conference announcement? We'll be there, live-blogging all the details if they do.
