[Apps to the left of you! Apps to the right of you! In the crowded app marketplaces, it’s all too easy to overlook a useful piece of mobile software. Our Get This App series can guide you to these under-appreciated gems.]
Ever since malware was found on the Play Store last year, it seems like we can’t go more than a week without hearing about some new outbreak of malicious apps on Android. While most of these threats are focused overseas, that doesn’t mean that users in the U.S. shouldn’t be taking precautions to protect our phones from similar hazards. Antivirus & Mobile Security by TrustGo may have a generic sounding name, but the app has a ton of features that make it easier to protect your Android phone from a variety of threats.
For starters, the A&MS malware scanner not only checks for malicious apps, but also gives apps a rating based on the types of ad networks they use. Apps that use annoying or particularly dangerous ads (such as those that keep track of your information) will be rated as more dangerous than apps that just have a banner ad or two. This feature is extremely useful when it comes to purging apps that spam your notification bar and home screens with ads and other unwanted content. A&MS scans all apps as they are installed, so you’ll know right away if the app your just downloaded presents a risk to you or your data.
If you’re unsure whether or not an app is malicious—and don’t want to risk installing it to find out—you can use A&MS’s built-in search to see how safe that app is. TrustGo has scanned nearly every app in the Play Store, so most of the apps that you’ll encounter will have a rating telling you how safe they are. Using both the malware scanner and the in-app search will help make sure that your Android experience is spam- and Trojan-horse-free.
A&MS also features a system monitor that shows you which apps are using up the most battery and which ones are taking up your system resources. This is all information that you can find in the Settings menu, but it’s nice to have it in one central location. If an app is taking up a disproportionate amount of battery life, you can uninstall it from within the system monitor without having to leave A&MS.
But not all threats are digital. You still have to worry about your phone getting stolen and having your data fall into the wrong hands. A&MS has anti-theft functionality that lets you remotely lock, wipe, and locate your phone should it ever go missing. By going to TrustGo’s website and logging in with your free account, you’ll be able to see the location of your phone on a map and hopefully get a few steps closer to recovering it. If you don’t think you’ll ever see your precious smartphone again, you can remotely back up the contents of your phone and perform a remote wipe to reset all the data on your device.
The best part about Antivirus & Mobile Security? The app and all of its features are free, meaning you’ll have protection without having to pay a monthly or yearly fee. So, if you’re looking for a way to protect your digital life on the cheap, give A&MS a try.
