Matt Brittin, Google's UK chief executive, told The Telegraph: "Facebook is an absolute phenomenon but there are other social networks which are successful too."

"It's a phenomenon that is with us to stay. I think what we'll see is the internet becoming more of a social place, as well as people being social within the context of social networks."

Brittin didn't deny rumors that the search engine is planning to launch another social network, Google Me.

Google Buzz was the search engine's first attempt at a social network. Launched in February this year, Buzz failed to attract the number of users that Facebook boasts.
