Every time Rovio stretches its Angry Birds franchise with another sequel, I think to myself that this has to be it.

Surely, I assume, the app-consuming public's appetite for flinging birds into structurally unsound objects has been fully sated by now. And yet with every new Angry Birds spin-off, be it Rio, Space or the recently-launched Bad Piggies, I'm proven wrong. Each new game rockets to the top of Apple's App Store charts in a matter of hours.

So when an editor suggested that I write about how Angry Birds has finally jumped the shark with Angry Birds Star Wars, I hesitated, because whenever someone makes this assumption, Rovio just keeps finding more sharks. No one could confidently predict that a Star Wars tie-in will be Angry Birds' undoing. It's safer to assume that it'll be Rovio's biggest hit yet.

Will Angry Birds Star Wars be any good? I couldn't tell you, because I've never really enjoyed Angry Birds to begin with. Its bird-flinging mechanics always seem too random, to the point that every level becomes a mind-numbing cycle of flinging, restarting and attempting to slightly adjust the angle of attack without any point of reference, often with fruitless results. A lot of people really, really love this, but it's not for me.

We know very little about the game itself. According to Kotaku, Angry Birds Star Wars will be available for download on November 8 for iOS, Android, Kindle Fire, Mac, PC, Windows Phone and Windows 8. The site also reports that the tie-in will include Halloween costumes, plush toys, action figures and other merchandise, which is no surprise. If you're going to bring together two brands that are infamous for overmilking, you might as well go all-out.
