Yahoo users in 2012 were most interested in their civic duty, but Apple gadgets, reality stars, swimsuit models, celebrities, and the British royal family were also important topics. That's according to the Web portal's top searches of 2012, released Monday along with a host of other top search lists for 2012 including the biggest obsessions, gadgets, memes, and scandals among Yahoo users.

You can find all of the top lists on Yahoo's 2012 Year in Review site, but here are some of the highlights.

Yahoo users in 2012 were all about the U.S. Presidential horse race, with the search term “election” taking the top spot as the most searched topic. Following closely behind was the highly anticipated iPhone 5 from Apple; after that, Kim Kardashian—in the news over her ongoing divorce drama, among other things.

Rounding out the top five are two Kates: Upton and Middleton. The former was popular for her appearance on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. The latter Kate garnered attention in 2012 for her appearances at the Olympics and a few unsolicited photographs that made their way into the tabloids following a vacation in France. It probably comes as no surprise that Apple products topped the list of most-searched-for gadgets in 2012 with the iPhone 5, iPad 3, and iPad Mini being the top searches for 2012.

Samsung is close behind with its ever-popular Android handset, the Galaxy SIII, followed by Amazon's Kindle Fire at number 5. The rest of the top ten most-searched-for gadgets includes more products from Apple, Amazon, and Samsung, as well as Barnes & Noble's Nook—showing that 2012 was mostly an iOS-Android obsessed year.

Other notable tech names and gadgets, such as the Microsoft Surface, Nokia 920, or anything related to BlackBerry are noticeably absent from the popularity list.

You can't round out a year on the Internet without reviewing the favorite memes and jokes that made the rounds on Facebook, Twitter, and email in 2012. Top memes included "Kony 2012," referring to Ugandan militant Joseph Kony, followed by Mitt Romney's ridiculed “binders full of women” statement during a U.S. Presidential debate. 

Fake storm photos from Hurricane Sandy came in at number three, followed by “ridiculously photogenic guy” another Presidential debate outtake, “Big Bird.”
