Microsoft hopes to make random phone reboots a thing of the past with Tuesday’s release of the company’s first official update to its Windows Phone 8 operating system.

Last month, some HTC 8X and Lumia 920 smartphone owners reported that their phones were spontaneously rebooting and freezing. At the time, Microsoft promised a fix would be forthcoming, but didn’t disclose the glitch that caused the reboots.

Tuesday’s Windows Phone 8 updated didn’t add any specifics, with Microsoft simply promising “performance enhancements” in the over-the-air update. Thus far, the update targets HTC 8X phones. We’ve asked Microsoft to comment on when the update will be available for other Windows 8 phones, but haven’t hear back; a company spokeswoman told Computerworld that Microsoft is working with other manufacturers and carriers to roll out the update to all Windows Phone 8 users.

HTC 8X owners at Windows Phone Central installed Tuesday’s update and filmed the new features included in the fix. Aside from the reboot patch, the upgrade reportedly includes new SMS features, such as an option to draft messages, select all, and reject calls with a text. The update also reportedly includes a feature that would keep Wi-Fi on even when the display is off.

The update takes more than 10 minutes to install, Windows Phone Central’s video indicated.

Windows Phone 8 is part of Microsoft’s attempt to create a cross-platform ecosystem. Many tech experts and analysts claim the mobile OS is Microsoft’s last chance to compete in the smartphone space. Fixing bugs and adding small but appreciable features goes a long way to ensure that Windows Phone 8 users are satisfied with their experience. And maybe they’ll embrace the rest of Microsoft’s offerings, too
