Last weekend saw another Ludum Dare 48-hour game jam. Dozens of teams raced to complete original games in two days on this Dare’s theme of Villainy. As a result we’ve got five great games that let you play the villain, often literally.

Atomic Creep Spawner

Atomic Creep Spawner is a game about defeating the hero that’s dared to wander into your dungeon. Spawn zombies, ghosts, and other monsters in order to whittle down the hero’s health before he can destroy all your evil orbs, collect all your gold and make it out alive.


Like Atomic Creep Spawner, Tyrano Force sees you playing the evil overlord and spawning more enemies to defeat the hero. Instead of a dungeon crawler Tyrano Force has you commanding an army of evil spaceship flying dinosaurs in a top-down shooter. Hold down space and spawn more evil dinos to kill the hero and reclaim Earth once and for all.

The Villain’s Rules

The Villain’s Rules is basically a playable version of my favorite film of the year, The Cabin in the Woods. You’re an evil serial killer looking to knock off the jock, the nerd, the party girl and the virgin before daylight and you’ve got to spring various traps to scatter the teens and kill them off in the right order.

Small Theft Auto

Small Theft Auto isn’t as long or as robust as the Grand Theft Auto series but it also has very different aims. While GTA never glorified crime as much as its detractors suggested, Small Theft Auto is relentless about making it clear just how much your life of petty crime hurts those around you and how quickly it can spiral out of control.

Tale of Scale

I’m not sure how Tale of Scale fits in to the Ludum Dare theme of villains considering you’re just a misbehaving kid, but I suppose it’s all a matter of perspective, which fits in pretty well with the game. In Tale of Scale you can pick up objects from any distance away and drop them closer or farther from you than where you found them. Problem is that they keep their relative size from your perspective, making them either much larger or much smaller than they were before. It’s an intriguing mechanic that I’d love to see fleshed out more by game creator Ratking.
