LAS VEGAS—I may not be a devotee of Project Runway, but audio company Sennheiser assures me that black is currently dominating the latest collections from the leading fashion houses. It’s in that spirit that the company just released the Momentum Black, a follow-up design to its relatively new, lifestyle-focused headphones.
The $350 headphones (also available in the original brown) are designed for use with mobile devices, and include a second detachable cable that offers the requisite in-line mic and three-button remote control unit.
The headphones use closed circumaural ear cups that help block out much of the outside world without resorting to noise-cancellation, while the headband slider is stainless steel and the earpads and headband are covered in top-notch sheep leather. And in a quick listening demo at CES, they sounded pretty darn good too.
At the same time, Sennheiser is also showing off its high-end IE 800 canalphones. As in, $1000 hign-end. But they offer an impressive design (scratch-resistant ceramic housing, silicone earpads, and multiple sizes of both round and oval eartips) and an equally impressive array of internal advances (a tiny 7mm Extra Wide Band Driver and frequency response from 5Hz to 46,500Hz).
