Last week, an update to Redsn0w opened up iOS 6.1 to the word of jailbreaking mere hours after its release. It isn't ideal, though: That jailbreak only works if you "tether" it to your computer when you start or reboot your phone or tablet, and it only jailbreaks older devices. A number of jailbreak developers hinted that a better jailbreak was in the works, and sure enough, it's out now.

The team of five developers, which now goes under the guise of evad3rs, successfully created an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 and 6.1 that it calls evasi0n. The best part? Evasi0n works on almost all iGadgets—even those with an A5 or A6 chip, which have been hard to jailbreak in the past.

To get the untethered jailbreak, you’ll need to download the evasi0n tool to your computer (it works with Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux), temporarily disable any Passcode locks you have, and close iTunes. Run evasi0n and connect up your iGadget, and let the evasi0n tool do its thing. An app will appear on the device’s screen — tap this, and your jailbreak will be complete.

So far, the only item that evasi0n doesn't work with is the third-generation Apple TV. Considering how well the team cracked A5 chip products, though, it’s probably only a matter of time before it’s added to the list. To get more instructions or help, visit the evasi0n FAQ page.

Jailbreaking your iOS device could void your warranty, so as aways, hack at your own risk. And while jailbreaking your smartphoneis legal in the US, that isn't necessarily the case for other devices like tablets and game consoles.
