Cats have taken over. Already, we have entire cafes devoted to their presence, houses built exclusively with them in mind, and more memes than we know what to do with. Now? Now, they've usurped an important part of tabletop gaming history and made themselves a part of that 1903 classic board game Monopoly. Oy vey.

If you're wondering how it all came down, this is the gist of it: Hasbro announced last month that fans could vote on which new token would come into play in Monopoly and on which of the originals would be saved from elimination. (Cue Survivor music.) Naturally, the cat won with a formidable 31% of the total votes.

Unsurprisingly, however, there were enough dog people amongst the voters to ensure that the little Scottie would remain. I'm not really sure how people succeeded in choosing the weakest link amongst the iron, the shoe and the wheelbarrow—how can anyone make memes with those?—but, in the end, the iron lost and was quietly removed from active duty.

The production of Monopoly games that will include the cat is now beginning in earnest. According to Hasbro's news release, we'll soon see cats on our tables somewhere mid-to-late this year.
