President Barack Obama is well on his way to winning the techiest president award, between an executive order to improve our cybersecurity , taking questions on Reddit, and mentioning 3D printing in the State of the Union address. Now there’s word that the President wants to completely map the human brain to figure out how it ticks.

Sources have told the New York Times that the government will soon invest billions of dollars in a 10-year project called the Brain Activity Map. The project could be the greatest collaborative research effort since the Human Genome Project, which wrapped up in 2003.

The Brain Activity Map project will hopefully give us a better understanding neurology and all the fine details of brain activity. Scientists hope the project will also help them to better understand the way neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s affect the brain. What’s more, the project could lead to advancements in artificial intelligence ( uh oh).

Obama teased this brain-mapping project during his State of the Union Address last week. “Today, our scientists are mapping the human brain to unlock the answers to Alzheimer's,” said President Obama, explaining that brain research is among the next job-creating investments in science and innovation.

The President also cited the Human Genome as a successful government project to completely map all the genes in human DNA that also made back more money in the long run. "Every dollar we invested to map the human genome returned $140 to our economy,” Obama said on February 12 to dissuade any government spending naysayers.

We don’t have any hard facts on who will be on the brain mapping team, but the NY Times speculates that we could hear an official announcement about the project by March. Be sure to check out the New York Times for more information on the Brain Activity Map project.
