With the launch of Hulu Plus on Windows Phone 8, Microsoft has landed yet another big-name app for its mobile operating system.

Shows available via Hulu Plus app for Windows Phone 8

Hulu Plus is now available through the Windows Phone store. The app allows subscribers to stream the current seasons of TV shows such as Community, Family Guy, and Modern Family (shown above),  older shows such as Lost and Arrested Development, and a selection of movies, including classics from Criterion.

Subscriptions to Hulu Plus cost $8 per month, but new users can get a one-week free trial.

As for Windows Phone-specific features, Hulu says the app’s Live Tile will show “updates on the hottest shows.” However, users cannot pin favorite shows to the Start screen.

Also, while Hulu Plus does promise a selection of ad-free children’s programming, such as SpongeBob SquarePants and iCarly, the app doesn’t support Kids Corner, a child-friendly feature that locks out certain apps and content.

(A Hulu representative said the company will listen to users and release new features over time.)

Windows 8 app catalogue growing

Missing Windows Phone features aside, Hulu Plus is another big addition for Microsoft, whose Windows Phone store has lagged behind iOS and Android, not only in quantity, but in quality.

Slowly, Microsoft has been getting more well-known apps into its catalog, includingTemple Run and Pandora in March, and Spotify for Windows Phone 8 in February. The beta launch of Unity for Windows Phone 8 may open the door for more games on Microsoft’s platform as well.

But just like Pandora and Temple Run, Hulu Plus isn’t available for phones running Windows Phone 7.8 or lower.

Apps developed specifically for Windows Phone 8 don’t support older versions of the operating system, due to Microsoft’s switch to the Windows NT kernel with its support for native C and C++ code.

That means as more noteworthy apps come to Windows Phone, owners of older handsets like the year-old Nokia Lumia 900 will fall farther behind.
