Reading a magazine is such a tactile experience: You flip through the pages, smell the perfume samples, carefully tear out your favorite images or articles, and either save the issues until they pile up and take over your apartment or give the stacks away to friends.

As dwindling magazine subscription numbers show, though, people are mostly consuming content online. Many big publications are in Apple’s Newsstand, but smaller titles need a platform, too. Digital publisher Issuu has provided that platform for the last seven years, but Wednesday it gave its look a much-needed reboot with a trendy, Pinterest-esque design and social tools for sharing pages from your favorite mags—just like the olden days.

You can now log into Issuu with your Facebook account to read more than 11 million publications and share specific pages. Another new feature is Stacks: You can create a theme—gluten-free cooking, architecture—and file your magazines away (or share them with friends).

Issuu’s redesign includes Stacks, where you can categorize your magazine subscriptions.

While major brands like the New York Times’ T Magazine, Vice, and The Atlantic use Issuu, the platform is designed more for small- to medium-sized niche publications, which is why sharing has become so important, Issuu CEO Joe Hyrkin told TechHive.

Publishers can easily distribute their work, and readers can discover little-known or underground magazines. (Imagine the possibilities if Issuu had been around in the riot grrl era of cut-and-paste zines.)

Hyrkin said right now Issuu is focused on helping readers discover more content. More social tools will roll out later this year.
