Pinterest wants to be more than a time-wasting source of pretty pictures, so it’s making those pictures a little more informative.

Now when you pin an item, Pinterest will keep you updated on price drops. If you’re decorating your home or buying new work clothes, Pinterest will tell you if your dream sofa or coveted shirt goes on sale.

No, you won’t get an email every time the price changes (thankfully). Pinterest will group the price drops in a single email, and you’ll see notifications when you sign in. Another plus: The site tells you how significant the price drop is. If you’re waiting for a 50 percent reduction and the price fell only 20 percent, Pinterest will tell you.

Pinterest now alerts you when prices drop on pinned items.

Companies will love the new feature because the reminders might prompt you to purchase an item instead of simply filing it away as inspiration. Users will love it because who doesn’t love getting a deal without having to constantly search for it? It’s a win-win.

Other recent updates

Pinterest has this year rolled out several updates to make its boards more useful. A redesign in March placed emphasis squarely on discovery, refreshed mobile apps for iOS and Android, and made it easier to pin on the go. The site also has added several small features here and there to make pinning, sharing, and following boards easier.

The company last week announced that more changes are on the way, including features that let you edit your home feed to see more boards you like and suggest related boards to you based on your Internet history—a tool you’ll be able to turn off if you don’t want to be tracked.

Pinterest is clearly fine-tuning the user experience before making any moves to monetize the site. The changes seem designed to satisfy both dedicated pinners and brands that might want to advertise down the line.
