On September 4, Samsung will take the stage two days ahead of the IFA Berlin trade show to introduce the world to the Galaxy Note III and a new smartwatch called Galaxy Gear. Samsung officially announced the event earlier in August, but only hinted at what the company had in store for the event.
On Tuesday, Lee Young-hee, Samsung’s vice president of mobile, confirmed to Seoul daily The Korea Times that the company would show off its new phablet and smartwatch next Wednesday, but the Samsung exec declined to provide details about the two new products.
Lee Young-hee first tipped off the world that the Galaxy Gear was coming in March in an interview with Bloomberg.
As far as the watch is concerned, Lee says it will not include a flexible display, after a Samsung patent for a flexible OLED smartwatch surfaced several weeks ago.
On August 19, GigaOm reported on what it believed would be the specs for the Galaxy Gear based on discussions with sources “familiar with Samsung’s plans.” Specs include a 2.5-inch display (or close to it), a dual-core processor, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, NFC, and a camera and speakers built into the watch clasp.
Galaxy Note III
The latest Galaxy Note III rumblings peg the screen at 5.68 inches, after purported photos of the Galaxy S III’s front surfaced on ETrade Supply. The Note III is expected to be packing either Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 or Samsung’s own Exynos 5420 processor depending on the region of the world you live in, with the U.S. slated to get the Snapdragon variant on AT&T, according to SamMobile.
Other features expected in the Note III include a SuperOLED 1080p display, 3GB RAM, 32GB onboard storage, microSD slot, 13 megapixel camera, and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
The most recent entry to the Note III rumor fiesta from Korea Economic Times says the new phablet will come with a 4K (ultra hi-def) camera capable of capturing images at a resolution of 3840-by-2160. The Note III will also offer 24-bit music playback, the report says.
Considering how this is still early days for 4K resolution, it feels a little too soon for anyone to release that kind of camera in a mobile device, but we'll know for sure whether the rumor holds any creedence in just over a week.
