He may have been reticent to talk about any possible partnership with Apple, but Verizon Wireless chief executive Ivan Seidenberg wasn't coy about planned changes to the company's pricing structure during a conference session Thursday with investors.

Mr. Seidenberg said the introduction of new products and services—likely in conjunction with the launch of fourth-generation wireless services (4G)—would allow Verizon Wireless to introduce a tiered pricing structure. The carrier would follow AT&T, which earlier this year introduced a two-tiered data structure with caps on how much data can be used. But Mr. Seidenberg said the tiers and bundled offerings would be different.
I guess we'll have to wait to find out how different, since he didn't put any numbers on it. And assuming Seidenberg was being totally candid, it sounds like he'll have to wait along with the rest of us to find out when -- and if -- Apple will build an iPhone for Verizon Wireless's planned 4G technology.
While Seidenberg told investors that Verizon Wireless, which has 92 million subscribers, is eager to carry the iPhone, he added, "I can't speak for Apple." Currently Apple has an exclusive deal for the iPhone with AT&T.
4G, which is expected to be the new industry standard, promises faster data transmission, which is increasingly important as smartphones continue to add more data-hungry features and capabilities and consumers demand better performance from their wireless networks. This puts pressure on carriers to ensure their networks keep up, forcing them to spend billions on infrastructure.
Regional cell phone company MetroPCS Communications on Tuesday became the first U.S. carrier to roll out 4G, introducing the service -- dubbed LTE, for Long Term Evolution -- to customers in Las Vegas. Verizon Wireless plans to offer LTE to 25 to 30 cities by the end of the year.
