Android 4.4 KitKat will make its way onto more smartphones in the United States, starting with the HTC One.

HTC's info page on Android software updates now lists HTC One as being in “certification” on all four major U.S. carriers. While there's no word on exact release timing, HTC says certification should be complete this week. After that, it'll be up to wireless carriers to roll out the update.

The HTC One's update status is still encouraging compared to that for Samsung, which has been vague about update timing for its U.S. flagship phones. Leaked versions of Android 4.4 KitKat recently popped up online for AT&T's Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, but these are just test builds, so it could be weeks or months before a final version is ready to roll out.

Users of LG's G2 may also have to wait a while. While the Korean version has already been updated, an international release may not happen until March, and a rollout on U.S. carriers could take even longer.

So far, Motorola is the only phone maker to have pushed Android 4.4 onto U.S. carrier handsets, including the Moto X, Droid Maxx, Droid Ultra, and Droid Mini. That's not a big surprise, given that these Google-influenced phones run a near-stock version of Android. Google's Nexus phones and Google Play edition handsets have also received the update.

Android 4.4 has several new features including new emoji, a fullscreen mode for apps, a smarter dialer, an improved e-mail appcloud print support, and a new homescreen design. It's not clear how many of those features will wind up in the customized versions of Android from phone makers such as HTC and Samsung.
