Further circumstantial evidence of a new Samsung smartwatch breezed through the Internet Saturday when the @evleaks Twitter account released images that show not one, but two new alleged Samsung wearables.

The image shown above was originally described as showing the “Samsung Galaxy Gear 2” and “Galaxy Gear 2 Neo,” but @evleaks later updated its account, tweeting, “I misspoke. Those watches are not Galaxy-branded.” And then, about six hours later, the account posted the image on the right, showing a high-res shot of a Samsungy-looking smartwatch bearing a bright orange band.

And that’s it. That’s all we know. That’s all @evleaks has shared on the topic, but it’s important to note that this Twitter account has a strong track record of releasing product images that ultimately turn out to be legit.

Now, it’s always risky to try to divine too much from a leaked product image, but assuming the photos—or are they renderings?—are in fact the real deal, we may want to pay attention to the following.

  • The date on the watches reads Monday, February 24. This lines up nicely with Samsung’s ”Unpacked” announcement at Mobile World Congress.

  • The new watches retain the basic styling of the original Galaxy Gear—this against my recommendation that Samsung consider a design overhaul.

  • In the screengrab at the top of this article, the @evleaks account describes the watch on the right as a Neo-branded product. Samsung has attached the Neo name to its low-end mobile gear, and if you look at the image closely, it appears the Neo version bears what looks like a plastic bezel, while the watch on the left retains the original Gear’s full-metal chassis.

  • The watches’ screens look perfectly flat, suggesting rumors of a curved display will prove false.

  • Gone are the four face-plate screws that appear in the original Galaxy Gear (see image below). Also notice the prominent physical button on the bottom of each watch (a home button perhaps?), and what appears to be a camera at the top of the watches. In the current Gear, the camera is directly integrated into the watch’s band.

The original Galaxy Gear.

I have now just spent 30 minutes of my Saturday dissecting imagery of an alleged smartwatch leak, and I’m not necessarily proud of my excessive zeal as a junior forensics investigator. Let’s hope this is the final Samsung smartwatch rumor story until the company shows off its new wearable(s) in Barcelona.

Or doesn’t. Because a rumor is a rumor, and anything can happen.
