The Academy Awards take place Sunday, March 2. If you're not going to be near a TV and want to watch them, ABC will let you stream them. Maybe.

It's another of those weird network TV half-steps. In order to watch, you need to use the iOS, Android or Kindle Watch ABC app (or web site). The problem is that not everyone can get access to live content through that app. You need to be located in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Houston, Raleigh-Durham, or Fresno. And you have to be a cable subscriber through AT&T U-Verse, Charter, Cox, Google Fiber, MidContinent, Optimum, Verizon FiOS, or Comcast Xfinity.

Assuming you're in that demographic, you log in using your cable provider's credentials and then you get the same show you'd get on your TV.

If you're one of the many people not in the right city or using the right provider (I'm in Raleigh-Durham but my provider is Time no dice) then it's back to the big screen for you.

But you still might want to keep your tablet handy, because everyone will have access to "The Oscars Backstage," a second-screen experience that will feature footage from the red carpet and from back stage at the Dolby theater. ABC's senior vice president of Digital Media Karin Gilford gives an example of what you might see via second screen: "For instance, if one of your favorite actors wins an award, you can see the great acceptance speech and then on 'The Oscars Backstage' experience follow them to a Thank You Cam where they can give a longer speech." Yay for longer speeches.

You can also watch clips and musical performances at where they'll be shared a few minutes after live airing.

The Academy Awards are on at 8:30 p.m. ET, 5:30 p.m. PT on March 2. For more on The Oscars Backstage, the Academy Awards live stream, and check out these articles at Variety and USA Today.
