The third expansion for Blizzard Entertainment's popular fantasy-themed massively multiplayer online role-playing game surpasses first-day sales figures of the previous expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King.

According to Blizzard, the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm expansion sold-through more than 3.3 million copies in its first 24 hours of release, claiming the title of "the fastest-selling PC game of all time." Cataclysm sold through 500,000 more copies than the previous expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. Cataclysm even had bigger day-one sales at GameStop than StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, according to Bob McKenzie, senior vice president of merchandising at the video game retailer.

According to Blizzard, the worldwide World of Warcraft subscriber base grew to 12 million players prior to the expansion's launch on December 7.
