Samsung is gearing up to release its own Google Glass competitor in September. The wearable, dubbed Gear Glass, is a simple earpiece with attached display that runs the Tizen OS, and will be ready in time for the IFA 2014 trade show in early September.

That’s the incredibly specific report from BusinessKorea, which attributes the information to an unnamed “Samsung associate.”

“We rolled out the smartwatch first, and have secured a considerable amount of smart glass-related technology and patents. Following the roll out of our smart watch Galaxy Gear in September last year, we are slated to introduce our smart glass Gear Glass this September,” the source told BusinessKorea.

This isn’t the first public mention of a product called Gear Glass. Last October, Mobile-Review’s Eldar Murtazin tweeted Gear Glass would be released in the April-May 2014 time frame. Yet here we are. Gear Glass isn’t a “thing” yet, only proving that tech rumors often never bear fruit, and reminding us that big technology companies like Samsung are in a perpetual state of product development—throwing R&D behind devices that may never publicly emerge.

That said, no one should be shocked to see Samsung release a one-ear face wearable. The company has proven an unwavering commitment to release smartphones and tablets in every form factor imaginable, and remains undaunted in its wearables effort, despite the fact that the original Galaxy Gear smartwatch was an incredibly flawed product, and the new Gear Fit activity tracker is plagued with problems.

So it really doesn’t even matter than not even Google has proven out viable consumer use cases for Google Glass. Of course Samsung must have a face wearable. This is the wearables gold rush of 2014, and anything goes.
