You probably know what On Star is: It's that service that connects drivers to a live concierge-type support rep while they're driving. You can ask for directions, find out why the Check Engine light came on and if you're in an accident, they'll contact you and facilitate getting help to the scene.
You may never have had a car with On Star, though. That's in part because the service is only available in new GM cars (On Star is a division of GM). Starting this spring, though, you'll have the opportunity to add the On Star service to almost any recent car.
The company is launching a mirror that hooks into your car's electronics and connects you to the On Star service. It'll work with the vast majority of recent cars and trucks, about 55 million vehicles currently, according to On Star President Chris Preuss.
Now, the other reason you may have never had a car with On Star is, it's expensive. The new product doesn't do anything to address that problem. The mirror will cost $299, plus professional installation (On Star is partnering with Best Buy to start out). The service starts at $18.95 per month or $199 per year.
