Face it: Windows's own photo manipulation and browsing software is about as bare-bones as it gets. If you've got a lot of digital photos--and these days, who doesn't--you need a versatile and easy-to-use tool to manage your archive. ThumbsPlus does, as its name suggests, generates thumbnails rapidly, but that's only the beginning.

Built around a framework for organizing a photo collection, ThumbsPlus also features both basic and advanced photo editing tools suitable for either a vacation snapper or a professional shutterbug. Beyond the obvious image rotation, and minor tweaking tasks (such as removing red-eye), you can generate proof sheets and annotate photos; automatically rotate images based on the EXIF metadata your camera embeds with each shot; create slideshows, Web pages, and (with the registered version) load a variety of RAW image file formats directly from the camera, or view your images in a screensaver.

If you need to manage, edit, or just browse though large collections of your photos, ThumbsPlus makes the built-in Windows image editor (or even Photoshop LE) look like a kid's toy.
