XHeader

XHeader is a free graphics utility whose sole focus is creating professional-quality headers for Web sites. To that end, it includes many built-in header graphics with stock images. Often, a header is the first thing a visitor sees at a small-business website, so this easy-to-use program will come in handy toward that end.

The free version of XHeader includes 50 header graphics, not many of which are that useful or iconic. Many are garish and wouldn't work with text on top of them, which is kind of the point. However, XHeader also lets you import images from elsewhere. These imported images can't be resized, though, so you'll need to use a different graphics program to get any external images looking right before putting them in XHeader. This seems to defeat the purpose.

Adding text is simple and the drop shadow feature will help your site's name stand out, especially if you choose an unobtrusive header image.

There's another use for XHeader aside from website headers. Those into creating ad banners for their Web site will find this a simple utility that will start up and create much more quickly than Photoshop.

Without the ability to resize imported images, XHeader can only get you so far. At some point in your small business's life, you'll need to go ahead and learn Photoshop. Until then, this will do.

Note: XHeader is freeware, but there are only 50 header graphics until you register free, at which point all 1,000 header graphics are unlocked. This link takes you to the vendor's site, where you can download the latest version of the software.
