PostSmile Free lets you add animated emoticons and canned sayings to your e-mail, instant messages, and blog posts. This easy-to-use program presents your options in a tabbed interface. You click and drag to insert a smiley face, and just click to plug in a famous quote or proverb.

This free version gives you access to three collections of animated smiley faces, plus more quotes, proverbs, and jokes than you'll ever need. It also provides boilerplate compliments, which didn't strike me as terribly useful. Upgrading to the $25 Premium version gets you access to more emoticon collections and unlocks access to useful features like creating your own signature.

The vendor says that PostSmile Free works with most popular e-mail clients, including Windows Vista Mail and Outlook, plus Web-based services like Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo Mail. According to the vendor, PostSmile also works with IM programs, forums, and blogs opened in Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox, including MySpace and MSN. I tested the program in a few different Web-based e-mail services and it worked as advertised--except with Gmail, where it embedded URLs instead of images. Messages received in Gmail displayed properly, however.

Although this program includes features that could be useful in a business setting, it seems more suited to casual use. Not many business communications would benefit from a Clinton joke or an animated smiley face.
