BgInfo

This clever freebie from Microsoft is a great help to anyone who needs to know vital information about their PC, such as its CPU, IP address, default gateway, machine name, amount of memory, and more. Run it, then choose what information you want displayed on your desktop. Click Apply or OK, and a bitmap will be written with all the information--and Windows will display it on the desktop.

You may run into one small bit of trouble with BgInfo: The folder into which it tries to write the bitmap may deny access. If so, choose Bitmap-->Location, and choose a different location for the file. You'll then be all set.
