By using a Firefox extension such as Flash Video Resources Downloader, or other method, to capture a YouTube video into an FLV file, you can then use SWF & FLV Toolbox to convert it into any format you choose.

Unfortunately, the features that everyone will be using don't work quite right. I tried converting several FLV files to SWF (a format that can be viewed in any Flash capable browser), and the resulting file always played far too slowly in a browser. FLV to AVI or animated GIF fared far better in tests.

During a conversion, the program can be minimized to the Quick Launch taskbar. However, when minimized and then maximized back out, the progress bar disappears, rendering it impossible to check on the file's progress until it completed.

It's surprising that a program that's made it past 3.5 still has bugs and quirks like these. Perhaps these will be ironed out in the next version.

Note: The demo version is free, but contains many limitations, most notably watermarking and converting only half the video.
