Scrapbookers have a knack for using image effects to create beautiful, often unusual pages from what might otherwise be ordinary photographs. One of their tricks is to overlay textures onto their pictures. Something Blue Studios offers a collection of high-resolution, print-quality ten textures, called Moody Photo Textures, that can produce very attractive effects.

The only system requirement for using Moody Photo Textures is an image or photo editing program that has layer effects. Copy and paste an overlay onto photo into its own layer, size it to cover the area of your photo you want to affect, then try out different opacity layers and various ayer Blend Modes--such as Saturation or Lighten--until you like the way it looks.

For an example, see our seagull photo. We applied four different Moody Photo Textures. The first edge we applied at full opacity and Normal Blend Mode. For the second edge, we set the Pinkish texture at Overlay and 73%. We used the mottled Purple Rust texture at Color and 53% opacity. Finally, we applied the Purplish Stain texture at Multiply and 50% opacity. The Overlay, Color, and Multiply Blend Modes apply the texture and color of the overlay (using different mathematical calculations) to the photo, while letting the underlying photo show through. Of course, you don't have to worry about the math under all the effects; that's the job of your photo editing program. Just try the various settings and see how they can unleash your creativity.

Moody Photo Textures is the second in a series of scrapbooking overlays from Something Blue Studios. Others are Antique Photo Textures and Worn Photo Overlays. At only $3.00 per collection, they're a bargain. And they're great not just for scrapbookers, but for anyone who wants to experiment with their photos and discover new visual dimensions through using overlays.
