After announcing it in June, Barnes & Noble and Samsung are ready to take the wraps off the co-branded Galaxy Tab 4 Nook. Barnes & Noble recently sent out press invites for an event on Wednesday, August 20 with the tagline "join us as the best of both worlds come together." The unveiling will happen at Barnes & Noble's Union Square store in New York City.

Even though the press invite didn't mention the Tab 4 Nook, specifically there's no surprise about what's coming. Barnes & Noble already said the new tablet would come in early August—although that has apparently slipped to later in the month. We also know that the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook will be a 7-inch device and will essentially be Samsung's Galaxy Tab 4 with Barnes & Noble's Android-based Nook software on it.

The Galaxy Tab 4 features a 7-inch display with 1280-by-800 resolution, a 3 megapixel front-facing camera and a 1.3MP rear shooter. It also has 8GB of onboard storage, microSD slot for another 32GB, and a 1.2GHZ quad-core processor.

Samsung originally sold the Galaxy Tab 4 for $200, but right now you can pick it up on Amazon and at Best Buy for $20 less.

Speaking of price, that's one of the few things we don't know about the Nook tablet. Will Barnes & Noble sell the tablet at a lower price point than the original Galaxy Tab 4 or will it be the same cost? Similar pricing may be a hard sell for a Nook tablet with Barnes & Noble custom software instead of a standard KitKat-flavored Galaxy Tab 4.

It's also anybody's guess when the Galaxy Tab 4 Nook will go on sale. But if I had to bet I'd say it will happen pretty quickly (if not immediately) after the press announcement on August 20.

A long road

This is the first Samsung-Barnes & Noble tablet resulting from a partnership the pair announced in June. Barnes & Noble has flip-flopped in recent months over its device building plans. In June 2013, the company said it would start working with third-party manufacturers to create Nook devices. But it quickly backtracked on that, announcing in August that it would make its own devices. Then in February, Barnes & Noble said it would work with "several world-class hardware partners" to produce a new Nook device before announcing the Samsung partnership in June.

Barnes & Noble also recently announced plans (for the second time) to split its physical retail and Nook businesses into two separate entities.
