If you've got a Samsung Virbrant and are waiting for CyanogenMod, don't hold your breath: The team responsible for bringing CyanogenMod to the Vibrant has completely dropped custom software support for the phone. The team says that the phone can't dial 911 while running on their custom Android build.

The issue seems to stem from the Radio interface layer conflicting with the audio layers. The CyanogenMod team says they won’t be able resolve the issue without the official source code from Samsung--which is not impossible given the company’s friendly relationship with the modding community and Steve Kondik (aka Cyanogen himself) works for Samsung.

Until that happens, CyanogenMod has made the responsible decision to drop support, and urges Vibrant users to flash the official Samsung ROM back on to their phones in the meantime. The CM team’s custom ROM will probably never disappear into the ether given the nature of the Internet, and you are free to load it against every suggestion not to. But before you do, weigh the value of more apps against losing the ability to access emergency services during a (God forbid) fire or worse.

The CyanogenMod team released this statement on its own forums this week:

We are no longer supporting the Vibrant due to the inability to dial 911. We consider the issues related to this unresolvable without source code from Samsung related to the Radio interface layer and its interactions with the Audio layers and have taken the decision to no longer support this. We apologize for the inconvenience and strongly suggest that Vibrant users use a Samsung ROM due to the 911 issues with any ROMs based on open source code.
