Automatic sliding doors are commonplace in just about any fancy building or shopping district, but we're still years away from the slick, science fiction-y types of entryways you might see in any number of USS Enterprise starship-class vessels. But Star Trek fans can instantly spruce up any plain doorway now, thanks to ThinkGeek and their brand-new Star Trek Electronic Door Chime. Small side note, though -- you can't buy one.

More specifically, the new gadget sold out in just three days, and who knows how long it'll take for ThinkGeek to replenish stock. At $30 per unit, it's surprisingly inexpensive for an official Star Trek collectable, so the next batch will likely disappear in similarly quick fashion.

Fans of Jean-Luc Picard need not apply though, because the door chime is modeled after the original Star Trek series' communicator panels. It can be freely mounted on just about any surface, and its settings alternate between the iconic "swoosh" sound effect or the high-pitched "Red Alert" alarm. Just imagine how cool it would be, buying up a dozen of them and having each one installed at strategic places in your office.
