Lurking within Starbreeze's Syndicate... a sneaky suggestion to apply for work.
Lurking within Starbreeze's Syndicate... a sneaky suggestion to apply for work.

Game developers have tried any number of strategies to try and fight software piracy but Syndicate developers Starbreeze Studios appear to have hatched a new scheme: recruit the pirates. A Reddit user named MikkelManDK found the message hidden in an .nfo file included in a legal download of the game.

.nfo files have traditionally been used by pirates for bragging rights about a new release. They largely consist of ASCII images showing off the pirate-group’s logo, with instructions for installing and playing ill-gotten games. Perplexed to find such a file included in his legitimate copy of the game, MikkelManDK opened the nfo to find a message from Starbreeze asking “Are you bored with watching from the sidelines? Ready to make the switch?” and providing contact information to look into working at Starbreeze.

In addition to the recruitment offer, the file also contained a plea to pirates to think of the game’s developers. “Over a hundred people spent several years of their lives making this game. If you like what you play, please consider purchasing it if you haven't.”

If you want to know more (including how to take Starbreeze up on their offer), take a look at the full text of Starbreeze’s .nfo file.
