Ever wanted to partake in an experiement where you can check out your own DNA, but weren't really sure how to extract it? PBS's Nova shows us how to do it with ordinary household items. Essentially, you rinse your mouth with saltwater; add a little soap, food coloring, and rubbing alcohol; stir; and voila--you've extracted your own DNA, and you can see it! Watch it:
A group of researchers over at Clemson University figured out a good way of putting an old HP DeskJet printer to use--they used it to study cells! The team managed to hack the printer to print a special ink that contains cells for use in research projects. The explanation is a little too technical for us to explain in a paragraph; read Gizmodo's piece for a good overview.
Need proof you saw a UFO? Then you're going to need more than just the camera on your phone. Fortunately, a team of alien-enthusiasts from France has created the kind of equipment you would need for such a task. Essentially, the team's UFO tracker consists of a disco ball and CCTV camera; the team uses it to monitor the skies for alien life. On the off chance aliens do head towards Earth, the camcorder will stream the findings to a computer. [via Hack A Day]
GeekBytes wouldn't be complete without a bit of Lego, and this set is pretty amazing. Lego will soon sell a 31cm tall, 2,127-piece R2-D2 set. It looks incredible, and that's not all: It can also rotate its head, and has a pop-out circular saw and computer interface connector, just like R2 does in the Star Wars films.
The downsides? It won't be out until May, availably will probably be limited at first, and it will set you back $180. Still, think of the geek-cred! [via Gizmodo]
