Say hello to the HTC One M9+, a bigger, better version of the phone just launched here in the U.S. This new iteration of HTC's flagship steps up the specs from the One M9 in several key areas.

The One M9+ packs an improved 5.2-inch, 1,440 x 2,560 quad HD screen—the One M9's display is merely 1080p—along with a fingerprint scanner not found in the base version. (Interestingly, the fingerprint sensor was bantered about in the rumor mill prior to the original One M9's launch but didn’t show up in the final model.) The RAM stays solid at 3GB, but the new phone swaps out the One M9's Snapdragon 810 processor for a 2.2GHz, octa-core MediaTek MT6795T.

This model also brings back the “Duo Camera” technology left out of the One M9. Perhaps this will improve the rather lackluster camera performance we found in our One M9 review.

In terms of software, the One M9+ ships with Android 5.0 Lollipop and HTC China Sense UI.

As the software's name indicates, the One M9+ is exclusive to China for now. There’s no indication from HTC’s blog post if we’ll get to see the new model in the U.S., but with Americans' growing appetite for big phones like the Galaxy Note 4 it wouldn't be surprising if it eventually landed stateside. We’ll have to store this in the “wait and see” file.

The story behind the story: This is the phone we wish HTC launched here. Our M9 review found it to be a disappointing upgrade. It’s a solid device, but didn't push the envelope in any meaningful way. This will be problematic this year for HTC given how good the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are in comparison.
