Hoping to get more developers on its side, Freescale Semiconductor has introduced a new version of its framework for creating IoT apps.
Chip vendors are hoping to take advantage of massive potential wearables and other IoT (Internet of Things) devices represent, and doing their best convince developers to build apps for products powered by their components.
Freescale has integrated the latest version of its ISF (Intelligent Sensing Framework) 2.1 with its Processor Expert tool to help create and configure sensor-based applications for devices based on its Kinetis microcontrollers.
The goal is to make it easier for developers to access information collected by sensors and take advantage of it in their applications. A large portion of new, sensor-based IoT applications originate from startups often unfamiliar with how to use sensor data, so they need help, according to Freescale.
ISF is also compatible with the company’s accelerometers, magnetometers, gyroscopes, and motion and pressure sensors. It will be demoed at the upcoming Freescale Technology Forum, which takes place next month in Austin, Texas. Visitors can attend tracks entitled sensor data collection and processing for sensor data analytics to learn more.
Freescale is competing with the likes of Intel, Toshiba, Qualcomm and Broadcom for the favor of developers. The latter chip maker announced Tuesday that the SDK for its IoT-centric WICED hardware platform is compatible with Apple’s HomeKit. HomeKit is a framework in iOS 8 for communicating with and controlling connected accessories in the home.
