Samsung Wallet shutting down June 30 to make way for Samsung Pay

Florence Ion

The death of Samsung Wallet has a hard date. The company is killing off the service on June 30, with Samsung Pay set to rise from its ashes.

The Samsung Wallet site now has a shutdown notice, informing visitors of the bad news. However, the focus is shifting to Samsung Pay, which packs technology that will allow for non-NFC payment terminals to accept mobile payments.

The story behind the story: Samsung has big ambitions for Samsung Pay, touting it as more secure and superior to Google Wallet and Apple Pay. The key is making the process seamless enough so that pulling out your phone will be more convenient than taking out your wallet. Google is cooking up some type of alternative to Google Wallet dubbed Android Pay, which we'll be on the lookout for at Google I/O later in May.

The rise of Samsung Pay

The company does expect better results from Samsung Pay, which will launch first on the Galaxy S6 this summer. It uses a technology Samsung acquired from LoopPay that allows the phone to interact with any payments device.

Even older machines that rely on swiping the card can talk to Samsung Pay, as the technology communicates a phantom swipe to the terminal. Currently Google Wallet and Apple Pay require NFC (Near Field Communications) transactions.
