Google Calendar added support for reminders on Monday, allowing users to track things that they need to do but don’t have a set time for alongside scheduled events.
When someone adds a reminder to their Google Calendar, it will stay with them until they complete it (or delete it), so they’ll keep getting told to schedule that doctor’s appointment or go to the grocery store. Creating a reminder also taps into information that people have stored within their Google account, so adding a reminder to call a particular person could auto-populate with that individual’s phone number.
That auto-population is primarily driven by information in users’ contacts, along with other details that Google has stored in its knowledge graph.
The new feature means that users can keep their to-dos and events in the same place, and track both simultaneously.
Reminders also integrate with other Google services, so ones that users create within Google Keep, Now or Inbox will also show up in Calendar, and vice versa. Combining those services means that users can set reminders using Google Now’s voice assistant capabilities, review them while looking over their daily schedules, and then mark them as complete when going over email.
The feature is coming first to Google Calendar on iOS and Android, and the company says that it’s planning to roll it out to the web eventually.
