HTC is building a “lifestyle” camera that will compete against the popular GoPro line of shooters designed for documenting outdoor adventures.
According to a report company is behind a Twitter account and web site teasing the ReCamera. The site loops a video of smiling and happy people swimming, dancing, biking, and otherwise enjoying life. One scene is a slow-motion sequence of a girl kicking a soccer ball.
We will likely know more as HTC invited press to an event in New York City dubbed, “Double Exposure”on Oct. 8.
The story behind the story: HTC’s financials are still in rough shape, despite the recent release of some excellent smartphones like the HTC One (M8). So they’re branching out beyond phones to boost the company’s sagging bottom line. They’ve done some neat stuff with cameras in their phones, so a GoPro-like action/life camera isn’t necessarily a bad way to start. Such a camera is designed to mount easily to helmets, travel bags, or other equipment for capturing journeys to the out-of-doors.
What kind of camera?
Still unanswered is if this will be a pure camera, something phone-like sporting Android, or connect to smartphones via an app. The “Double Exposure” press invitation is more selfie themed, showing two women posing for a photo with an HTC One (M8).
However this turns out, HTC is going full bore into the photography space. We will just have to wait a couple weeks to see how this turns out.
