After months of run-around and ambiguity, CCP confirmed Wednesday its awe-inspiring space dog fighting game EVE: Valkyrie is planned as an Oculus Rift exclusive launch game. Surprise!
What’s that? You aren’t surprised?
Of course you aren’t. The game has never been shown to press on anything except for Oculus hardware, and the team has been one of first teams to receive updated Oculus Rift kits whenever there’s a new release, including the latest Crystal Cove prototype.
Still, it’s great news for Oculus, which will now be co-publishing the game. EVE: Valkyrie, which started as a small side-project at CCP, has consistently been one of the strongest showcases for the infant virtual reality tech—and with good reason.

“We strongly believe the best VR experiences are going to be the ones built from the ground up for VR, and we’ve kept that in mind whilst developing Valkyrie,” members of the EVE: Valkyrie team wrote on Oculus’s blog—a sentiment similar to the one espoused by Oculus founder Palmer Luckey at the recent Steam Dev Days conference.
“We wanted people to really feel like they were there—to sense the vastness of space, feel the confined area of the cockpit and get that adrenaline rush as you see an exploding fighter whizz past your head,” the Valkyrie team continued.
I can speak from personal experience—Valkyrie works, and it works well. I first saw Valkyrie at E3 last year, when the game was still titled EVE-VR , and it turned me into an Oculus advocate.
I went into the demo room on the final day of the show with no idea what to expect, put on the Oculus, and was told, “Look down.” When I did, and my virtual head also looked down at my virtual body clutching cockpit controls, I felt the same exhilaration as the first time I played a 3D game years and years ago.
There’s still no word on an actual launch date still for either the game or the Oculus Rift hardware itself, but Valkyrie is a big win for Oculus in an increasingly-crowded VR market. “We’re looking for more great developers to partner with on made-for-VR content,” Oculus wrote on its announcement page. Here’s hoping they’re all as compelling as this coup.
