Hewlett-Packard is taking the heft and bulk out of its EliteBook and ProBook business laptops, and powering them with the latest processors from Intel and Advanced Micro Devices.
The company said its EliteBook 800 laptop models are 40 percent thinner and 28 percent lighter than previous models. The other new business laptops include the ProBook 400 and 600 models, which have a lower starting price than previous models. Optional touchscreens are being offered with some laptops.
The laptops come with either Intel’s fourth-generation Core processors code-named Haswell or AMD’s A-series processors codenamed Kabini. The chips provide a longer battery life and better performance.

The EliteBook 820 G1 has a 12-inch screen and is 35 percent thinner and 18 percent lighter compared to its predecessor, HP said. The other new models also include the 14-inch EliteBook 840 G1 and the 15.6-inch EliteBook 850 G1, which are designed to Intel’s thin-and-light Ultrabook specifications. The laptops start at $799 and are now available in the U.S.
The new EliteBooks have a security feature called “Sure Start Crisis Recovery Mode,” which will be able to detect and recover from any malicious attack on the laptop’s boot sector.
The ProBook 600 series laptops add LTE as a mobile connectivity option. The 14-inch ProBook 640 G1, the 15-inch ProBook 650 G1 will have Intel processors and will become available on Nov. 18 for $699. Other models include the 14-inch ProBook 645 G1 and the 15-inch HP ProBook 655 G1, which will be offered with the latest Advanced Micro Devices processors.
The budget ProBook 400 models will start at $499, which is lower than the $600 price on current models with Intel’s previous generation Ivy Bridge processor. The new ProBook models are now available in the U.S.
HP did not immediately respond to questions about worldwide availability of the laptops.
