Arduino Hack Lets You Control TV, Annoy Others

Remember those cheap remote control jammer toys that you could use to stop folks from changing the TV channel? One Instructables user has created a more advanced version, allowing you control of more than just a TV–whether you have the remote in your hands or not.

This neat little hack comes from Instructables user Wally Z, a self-described tinkerer, and just like the old jammer toy, Wally’s creation works by communicating over infrared beams. But this Arduino device can be programmed to control a whole host of devices: As long as it has an infrared interface, chances are you can get this to work–whether it be a TV, DVD player, VCR, or even a digital camera.

To get started on the project, you will need the requisite Arduino board, an Infrared LED, a cheap Infrared sensor, a USB cable, and a PC to do the necessary programming on. The four-step guide details how you can create your own basic Arduino remote, including how to get all the required code from the device you’re loooking to control.

With a little further tinkering I’m pretty sure a project like this could be used as the basis for the ultimate all-in-remote.
