PocketNow has posted a leaked rendering and details on the LG X3, which is reportedly the company’s first quad-core phone. Specs include an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor, a 4.7-inch 720p display, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 1.3-megapixel forward-facing camera, 16 GB of built-in storage, and a MicroSD slot. The phone measures less than 0.35 inches thick, according to the leaked details.
That’s not all. Earlier this week, PocketNow posted renderings of another leaked quad-core phone: the HTC Endeavor (or the HTC Edge, according to earlier reports). Like the LG X3, the Endeavor reportedly uses a Tegra 3 processor and has a 720p display.
Quad-core processors will inevitably play a big role in this year’s high-end Android phones, it’s just a matter of timing. Both of the LG X3 and the HTC Endeavor could be debuted at Mobile World Congress in February, followed by a launch in the Spring or early Summer. Samsung’s Galaxy S III, which may also use a quad-core processor, could debut around the same time.
Not all apps will benefit from the extra processing power, but Nvidia is working with some game and app developers to optimize their software for the chipset. Tegra 3 includes a smaller fifth core that handles tasks at a lower frequency when you’re in active standby mode or during video and music playback. Hopefully the first batch of quad-core phones will have better battery life as well as more power for apps.
Of course, even after these phones get announced, they’ll still need to get picked up by wireless carriers–who are in no rush to refresh their lineups after a busy holiday season. Even after the first quad-core phones are officially revealed, it’ll probably be at least a few months before they land on U.S. shores.
