LinkedIn’s leader said he doesn’t think Google+ will be able to make it in a world that already has Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn because “nobody has any free time,” according to SlashGear.
Weiner says Facebook is for communicating with family and friends, Twitter is for sending 140-character messages into the ether, and LinkedIn is for your professional life. There’s no room left for another social network: “You introduce Google+, where am I going to spend the next minute or hour of my discretionary time? I have no more time,” Weiner said at an event this week.
“Unlike social platforms and TV, which can coexist, you don’t see people using Twitter while they’re using Facebook, or using Facebook while they’re using LinkedIn,” Weiner went on to say.
Weiner’s thoughts aren’t exactly shared by other social networks; Tom Anderson, founder of MySpace, says that he doesn’t think social networking is a “zero sum game,” and he hopes to see distinct networks thrive.
Meanwhile, Facebook certainly seems to think people have time for Google+, or why would Facebook officials spend all their time removing Google+ ads on their site and trying to keep people from importing their Facebook contacts into Google+?
So yeah, it’s a little funny that the CEO of a social network thinks we don’t have time to use social networks, but maybe he’s just trying to talk down a competitor.
