Kickstarter Project Aims to Take Geocaching Into Space

Have you ever been geocaching? While it may seem a little lame to those who haven’t, there is a slight thrill to being able to track down a hidden item using only clues and a set of co-ordinates from the person who put it there. Still sounds a little uninteresting? How about geocaching in space?

Wait, what?

In a test last year, a Kickstarter user named Scott managed to launch a geocache item into space by attaching it to a large balloon, equipped with a Kodak Zi6 camcorder along with a Samsung Epic 4G and Motorola Backflip phone. The video managed to record the geocache travelling 101,000 feet into the air, before the balloon burst and came hurtling back down to Earth, 124 miles from the original launch site. That geocache is still available for people to find.

Scott now wants to do more, even bigger launches for more interesting places to geochache. In order to get things going, though, he had to drum up a bit of support on Kickstarter. People could donate as little as a dollar, and money would be spent on things like weather balloons, better tracking systems, and other more state of the art equipment.
