Sharp and NHK (the Japanese Broadcasting Company) have banded together to create a new 85-inch Super Hi-Vision display that’s 33 megapixels dense, or 7680 by 4320 pixels. In other words, that 16 times the resolution of a current HDTV.
I’ll give you all a moment for the shock and awe to settle in.
Apparently the companies have been at the making a dramatically higher resolution television game since 1995 and their hoping to start broadcasts in 2020. The actual mega-panel uses Sharp’s UV2A*2 LCD technology the companies were able to create a virtual reality like image without any 3D.
Judging from the life-like video of the screen, which made my jaw drop just from seeing it on my puny 1680 by 1050-resolution screen, it must have enough visual fidelity in real life to cause the need for a change of pants.
The LCD will be shown to the public at NHK’s Science & Technology Research Laboratories in Tokyo from May 26 to 29, 2011.
