A bunch of nefarious communists occupy United States soil in THQ’s Red Da–I mean Homefront (PC, PS3, Xbox 360). Actually, the game’s by the same guy who penned the 1984 cult not-quite-classic film Red Dawn, John Milius. In Homefront, he bumps the clock ahead to 2027 and substitutes North Koreans for Russians. If you can get past the obvious inanity of that premise, I’m hearing decent things about the game itself, though some are saying the single-player campaign’s awfully short. ETA: March 15
If you’d rather prowl the “real” underground world of Tokyo in a stylish crime-action game, Yakuza 4 (PS3) has you covered. This fourth in series multi-character brawler drops you in a fictionalized version of Tokyo’s red light district Kabukicho, and lets you explore back alleys, bars, rooftops, underground vistas, and various other disreputable milieus while working the game’s crime-drama beats. ETA: March 15
And after nearly 11 years, the Total War series comes full circle with Shogun 2 (PC), a real-time strategy game set in sixteenth-century feudal Japan. Expect designer Creative Assembly’s characteristic history-“lite” gameplay, sweeping samurai-led military smackdowns, and a bunch of new features, like rotating 3D campaign maps, multi-stage sieges, and roleplaying-style character building. ETA: March 15
