You know how Microsoft’s Kinect broke a world record last week, selling somewhere in the vicinity of 10 million sensors? And how we’ve heard relatively little from Sony about PlayStation Move sales?
According to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, the matchup math comes comes in at 5 to 1, Kinect sensors to PlayStation Move controllers sold.
Pachter’s not pulling that ratio out of the air, either. The numbers apparently come from retail sales tracker NPD Group.
“Under one-fifth of PS3 sales included bundles with Sony’s Move controller, suggesting another modest month,” wrote Pachter in an investor note canvassing February 2011 video game sales.
“Over 2/3 of Xbox 360 sales included bundles with Microsoft’s Kinect peripheral, as Xbox 360 Kinect console bundles again outsold PS3 Move console bundles by over 5:1.”
Pachter noted that the top-selling Kinect games “easily” outsold their Move equivalents.
“We expect demand for the Xbox 360 to remain stronger than the other consoles due to the popularity of Kinect,” writes Pachter, adding that he expects both Wii and PS3 sales to decline and hardware sales overall to be down in 2011 pending further price cuts.
When to look for those price cuts? Sometime this summer, probably at gaming’s splashiest annual event, the E3 trade show in June.
